Rosneft Helps Penza Zoo to Repair Polar Bear Enclosure

Rosneft supported the renovation of the walk-in enclosure for a polar bear named Bely in the Penza Zoo.
The works lasted about a month and included the complete replacement of the floor covering of the site: removal of the old screed, restoration of the concrete abutment of the pool bowl, coating of the site with primer, concrete contact treatment and installation of a poured floor with a special durable polyurethane paint.
The polar bear exhibit was closed to visitors for construction work while the polar bear was in the feeding enclosure. After repairs were made, the bear was released into the renovated site.
Conservation and protection of the polar bear population is one of the main aspects of Rosneft's environmental programme. 
Since 2013, Rosneft has been patronizing all polar bears in Russian zoos. To date, the Company has provided support to 34 polar bears in 16 zoos across the country, including housing, feeding, veterinary care, as well as cage renovation and scientific research. Rosneft has also developed special toys to enhance the physical activity of the animals. Different products made of extra strong plastic are sent to zoos every year.

Rosneft studies polar bears as biological indicator species for Arctic ecosystems. Several large-scale expeditions have taken place during this time, 
as scientists studied the migration routes, abundance and distribution density of these polar predators, as well as conducted various analyses of biological samples.
Rosneft supported an expedition to study and monitor the polar bear population on the north-western coast of the Taimyr Peninsula and islands of the Kara Sea in September. Scientists of the A.N. Severtsov Institute for Problems of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences conducted a full-scale survey of the red-listed animal population distribution during the ice-free period.
The research is being carried out as part of Rosneft's biodiversity conservation programme called Tamura. The Arctic Research Centre of the Company implements the programme. Studies of reindeer and birds on the Taimyr Peninsula and fish in the Yenisei River estuary are planned between 2024 and 2027. There will be ten expeditions in total over four years.
